Touring canine troupe turns Millennium into doghouse

The Cincinnati Post, November 11, 2003
Post staff report

Cincinnati's Millennium Hotel has gone to the dogs. Literally.

About 30 pooches of every canine shape and size and their humans have converged on the downtown hotel as part of the entertainment for a private Procter & Gamble event being held there Monday and today.

The dogs are all specially trained canine acrobats that run fast, jump high, and retrieve at incredible speeds.

They're part of a troupe of family pets, trained by 250 amateur handlers, who have appeared in Iams Superdogs shows across the United States and Canada over the past 25 years.

The dogs -- which leap over hurdles, run through obstacles and roll barrels -- perform for about a million people every year.

Most of the dogs aren't unusual breeds. Some are even crossbreeds, although the troupe includes Chinese Cresteds, pugs, and a few Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

The dogs travel along with their human companions on a specially equipped bus, although the dogs spend their time in cages while the humans get the seats.

Some of the dogs are staying at the hotel. Usually, the hotel requires a $100 deposit for guests who want to bring their dogs along, and there's a 10-pound weight limit for the canines.

Dayton-based Iams was acquired by P&G in 1999.
