Royal Manitoba Winter Fair
"It's great to come to the Fair in Brandon. People are wonderful and so
friendly. Everybody wants to stop and pet a Superdog. I love it," says
Spitfire's owner and trainer, Janet Ingersoll.
The
Winnipeg-based team is just one of more than 300 Superdog teams in
North America. Groups of teams are assembled from each region as well
as from other parts of the country to perform at the shows organized by
Superdogs producers, Herb Williams and Leonard Chase. Each show
features a variety of dogs and handlers. Ingersoll and Spitfire do
three or four big shows per year, while other teams might do up to six,
all depending on location and availability.
"It's fun to get out
and play with your dog. That's what it is. Your dog has so much fun,
with the jumps and the running, and you can't make a mistake. Dogs are
dogs and people aren't there to see perfection. They're there to see
you have fun with your dog and see your dog doing the best it can. It's
great!" says Ingersoll, who has had Spitfire for seven years, but has
been involved in the Superdogs for 18 years. "The first time I saw
Superdogs, I knew immediately that I wanted to do this. It looked like
so much fun."
Training for Superdogs starts the very first day
the dog arrives in the trainer's home, beginning with puppy training,
playing, socializing, and obedience classes. When the dog is a year
old, agility classes are added and training remains part of the dog's
daily regime.
"This is my second year with Superdogs," says
Melanie Hart, a Brandon-based trainer who has two golden retrievers -
Chance and Caesar. She has also participated in shows in Saskatoon and
Thunder Bay. "It's so much fun being out there, playing with your dog
and everyone loves to meet the Superdogs, and being that I've got
golden retrievers, they love to meet everybody. So, it's great for
them."
The recently released movie, Daniel and the Superdogs,
features Streak, the furry star of the film that is one of two other
Winnipeg Superdogs in this week's shows at the Royal Manitoba Winter
Fair. Other dogs that had been involved in the movie have also been
performing in Brandon. Superdogs shows run three times daily - at
approximately 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 8 p.m., fitting in between horse
jumping events in the main arena during the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
