SuperDogs a Hit With Fairgoers
The SuperDogs bark excitedly before taking turns racing against one
another and jumping over obstacles in the Keystone Arena during the
Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
Their young fans, who dangled their
legs over the arena wall and cheered from their seats, can't get enough
of these energetic canines.
"They're cool and they're fast," said eight-year-old Bryce Wytinck, from Teulon. "I like the way they do the big relay."
The show moved to the main arena this year due to popular demand.
The
crowd teams up with the dogs, one side of the arena cheering one team
of the Brandon Sun-sponsored event, and the other side the second team.
"When the dogs were racing five against five was my favourite," said Bryce's 11-year-old brother Corey.
The
sound of cheers is deafening - shocking considering the little bodies
they come from. Some stood in the seats next to their parents.
Lara
Teetaert is seven years old and already the Goodlands girl is a Winter
Fair regular. And each year, she takes in the SuperDogs. "I like the
way they run," she said.
This year, some of the dogs are
celebrities. The movie Daniel and the Superdogs was in theatres earlier
this month, but the flick's canine star, Streak, has hardly let it go
to his head. The Jack Russell terrier lapped up after-show attention
yesterday afternoon in the Keystone Centre's Salon A.
Streak played Gypsy in the movie but yesterday, it was all about being cute and earning treats.
"It's
just a lot of fun," said Kristin Harrigan, SuperDogs trainer. Streak's
owner couldn't attend the fair but Harrigan considers it an honour to
be in charge of the easy-to-please dog. Fans kept him busy before
Streak took a much-deserved outside break, with a constant barrage of
hugs and petting.
Paw autographs will be available throughout
the week and the troupe will perform three times daily throughout the
fair. The final day of the 98th annual event is Saturday.
